MONTALCINO: The Fortress & Wine-tasting of Brunello Wines EXCURSION
Montalcino, with its world-famous Brunello wines, dates back to the Etruscan and Roman times. Strategically positioned along the ancient Via Francigena, Montalcino rapidly acquired the structure of a military city with large fortified walls for defense, numerous towers and a fortress.
Piazza del Popolo, the heart of the town, includes the charming Communal Palace, from the 13th and 14th centuries. There is also the 13th-century Church of Saint Augustine, a Romanesque/gothic structure, with frescoes showing episodes from the life of the saints. Next to the church, the Convent of Saint Augustine is distinguished by two 14th-century cloisters that host the Riuniti Civic, Diocesan e Archaeological Museums.
The imposing fortress rises above the town and hosts a wine shop, for tasting and purchasing the famous Brunello (one of the few Italian red wines with D.O.C.G. certification). The Rounds of the Towers, near the fortress, offers a sweeping view of the Orcia Valley.
