SAN GALGANO & MONTICIANO EXCURSION

One of the most important Italian monasteries San Galgano sits along the stretch between Siena and Massa Marittima. Around the year 1180, the Knight Galgano Guidotti built a Chapel on Mount Siepi. The Cistercian monks built an oratory and a building in memory of the monk Galgano, who was canonized a saint.

Modern visitors can see the impressive remains of the Abbey, made of brick and marble. The Abbey (without a roof) offers a view of the sky and a meadow floor — an evocative scene at sunset.

The Church of Montesiepi, from the 12th century, sits on Mount Siepi and hosts frescos of Ambrogio Lorenzetti and the sword of San Galgano. Much like King Arthur, San Galgano’s sword struck so deeply in the rock that it formed a cross with the hilt.
